“Let the reader understand.” — Jesus (Matthew 24:15)
There are certain prophetic phrases in Scripture that strike like lightning—brief, brilliant, and terrifying. One of the most mysterious is found in the book of Daniel:
“The abomination of desolation.”
It sounds ominous. Because it is.
But what does it mean? When did it happen—or has it yet? Is it just ancient history, or a signal for modern believers to wake up?
Let’s break it down with the clarity and urgency it demands.
Daniel’s Prophecy: An Unholy Horror in a Holy Place
The phrase appears in three key spots in the book of Daniel:
- Daniel 9:27 – “On the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate…”
- Daniel 11:31 – “They shall set up the abomination that makes desolate.”
- Daniel 12:11 – “From the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination… is set up…”
What’s being described here is a sacrilegious, defiling act in the Temple of God—something so vile that it causes horror, abandonment, and divine judgment.
Historical Fulfillment: Antiochus IV Epiphanes (167 B.C.)
In one sense, this prophecy found fulfillment during the intertestamental period, when a tyrant named Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a Greek king, unleashed brutal persecution on the Jews:
He banned all worship of Yahweh.
He sacrificed a pig on the altar in the Jewish Temple.
He erected a statue of Zeus inside the sanctuary.
He defiled the holy of holies, turning it into a place of pagan idol worship.
This wasn’t just blasphemy. This was war on God Himself. It was an abomination—and it left the Temple desolate.
This desecration sparked the Maccabean revolt, a bloody Jewish uprising that eventually reclaimed and rededicated the Temple (the origin of Hanukkah).
But according to Jesus… the prophecy wasn’t finished.
Jesus’ Prophetic Warning: A Future Abomination
Fast forward 200 years. Jesus, teaching about the end times, says this:
“So when you see standing in the holy place the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand…” (Matthew 24:15)
He was pointing forward. Not backward.
And just 40 years later, in 70 A.D., the Roman Empire destroyed the Temple. Roman troops—who carried idolatrous military standards—entered the holy place and burned it to the ground. Blood ran through the streets. Not one stone was left on another.
It was desolation again. But was that the final fulfillment?
Is There a Future Fulfillment Still to Come?
Many theologians and Bible scholars believe there’s a final “abomination” yet to come—during the end times, just before the return of Christ.
This fits with Paul’s warning in 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4:
“The man of lawlessness… will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God.”
This “man of lawlessness”—also referred to as the Antichrist—will likely:
Take control of a rebuilt Jewish Temple (or spiritual equivalent).
Stop regular worship.
Claim divinity for himself.
Demand global allegiance.
In other words, a future abomination is coming that will make the past ones look like rehearsals.
Why Does This Matter to You Right Now?
Because even if the Temple isn’t standing… you are.
You are a temple of the Holy Spirit.
And the devil is still trying to desecrate God’s holy place.
He wants to defile your mind.
He wants to profane your marriage.
He wants to corrupt your leadership, dull your passion, and sit on the throne of your heart.
This isn’t just about ancient empires or prophetic timelines.
It’s about your life—right now.
And the warning still echoes:
“Let the reader understand.”
How Do We Stay Ready?
Stay rooted in Scripture.
The more you know God’s Word, the quicker you’ll spot the counterfeit.
Guard your worship.
Don’t let idols set up in your temple. Tear them down.
Discern the times.
Don’t obsess over signs—but don’t ignore them either.
Preach Christ boldly.
Wherever the abomination of desolation rises, let it find a church standing like a wall of fire.
Final Word: The Lion Is Not Afraid
The abomination is real. The war is real.
But the victory is already written.
The Antichrist rises—but Christ returns.
The Temple falls—but the Kingdom stands forever.
The Lion of Judah is coming—and He will cleanse every desecrated place.
